Blaugust 2025

A year or two ago I first noticed some of the folks I follow on Mastodon posting about the coming of Blaugust, a community-driven hey-you-should-blog-more event. From Blaugust 2025 is Coming!, by Nerd Girl Thoughts:

Blaugust is a month-long event that takes place each August which focuses on blogging primarily and has started to include other forms of serialized content over the last several years. The goal is to stoke the fires of creativity and allow bloggers and other content creators to mingle in a shared community while pushing each other to post more regularly. Above all the goal of Blaugust has always been to prove to folks that they can in fact sit down every day and create something fresh and then share it with the world.

I'm a sucker for a time-boxed community event encouraging me to do a thing I wanted to do anyway (hence #100DaysOfTrees) so I decided to jump in this year starting with a fun thing techy people did several years ago. The Blaugust Rainbow Diamond Award is reserved for those that post 31 times in 31 days, and I "only" posted 20 times which is solidly between silver and gold (plus two out of three ain't bad).

Along the way I discovered some great new blogs (that all support RSS, which is good), and weighed in on the blog comments discourse. I even wrote a gaming-adjacent post, and gaming was the entire theme of the original Blaugust community, as I understand it.

The discussion about blog comments led me to some excellent, thoughtful writing about the indieweb, digital gardens, and the blogosphere that made me reflect on how important it is to have your own website. But I don't think I want to just write a blog or POSSE my social posts though. I want more of a personal website with some blog posts, some notes, some digital gardening, some slash pages, and whatever else I want to include. It is going to be slow going because making stylistic choices can be hard (hence the default blog theme), and I already do more writing than posting, but it is something I'm actually excited about with technology. And given the emotions BigTech™️ has been inspiring in folks recently, myself included, I count that as a huge win!
